Ambientato in Scozia, protagonista maschile è un giovane di nome James che si appresta ad unirsi felicemente in matrimonio con la bella Effie, fin quando tale sicurezza dei sentimenti per la bella fidanzata inizia a vacillare non appena inizia ad apparirgli in sogno una stupenda silfide innamoratasi di lui. Il giovane non riesce a sottrarsi al fascino della silfide ed a sua volta se ne innamora. Continuano i preparativi delle nozze e nel corso di essi appare tra la folla la strega Madge che rivela ad Effie quanto il suo sposo sia fortemente preso da un’altra, così James caccia via la strega, ma resta nuovamente abbagliato dalla bellezza della silfide che si manifesta solo a lui. Prima che inizi la cerimonia quest’ultima, si appropria dell’anello nuziale e lo porta via con se nella foresta, così da farsi inseguire da James per riavere l’anello. Atto II Giunto nella foresta, la Strega appare a Jemes porgendogli una sciarpa magica che a suo dire sarà in, grado di catturare la silfide. In realtà si tratta di una sciarpa avvelenata che poggiata sulle ali dell’amata non solo gliele fa cadere, ma ha un effetto mortale sulla povera Sylfide che circondata dalle compagne si spegne. Intanto procedono le nozze di Effie, non più con il giovane James, che intanto guarda la scena da lontano,ma con un amico Gurn. L’altra versione estremamente nota di tale balletto, conosciuta soprattutto per il ruolo di spicco attribuito al protagonista Maschile, è quella di Bournonville. Quest’ultimo dopo aver assistito alla rappresentazione francese, ne fece una versione personale, cambiandone stile e tecnica adeguati al suo modo di far danza e scegliendo per arrangiamenti musicali il ventunenne Hermann Severin von Lovenskjøld. Tale versione fu poi rappresentata, al Teatro Reale di Copenaghen.
