Ambientato a Parigi e dintorni, la prima parte del balletto vede protagonisti della scena Madame che giunge in una locanda molto frequentata, seguita da cortigiane ed attrici e Lescaut, il fratello di Manon, un giovane arrivista che cerca di concludere il miglior affare economico possibile sfruttando l’avvenenza della seducente sorella Manon. Quest’ultima, infatti, attira l’attenzione di quasi tutti i presenti, ma Lescaut è interessato soprattutto all’ evidente coinvolgimento emotivo mostrato da due facoltosi signori Monsieur Guillot ed un anziano signore che accompagna Manon nella locanda. L’avvenenza della ragazza non ha paragoni, finanche il giovane Cavalier des Grieux è profondamente innamorato di lei e, mentre, il fratello della donna è impegnato a trattare il miglior prezzo per la sorella, il Cavalier convince Manon a scappare con lui. Il ricco e potente Monsieur Guillot riesce a spuntarla, proponendo un’offerta così vantaggiosa da non poter essere rifiutata, si accorda, dunque, con Lescaut di diventare il nuovo protettore della giovane.
Manon e Grieux trascorrono momenti di indimenticabile felicità ed amore, tali da far ricordare al giovane di dover compilare una lettera per il padre che gli dia notizie certe della sua situazione attuale, così, mentre egli si allontana per spedire la lettera, Manon viene raggiunta dal fratello in compagnia del Monsieur Guillot. Entrambi la seducono con gioielli e pellicce e la convincono ad acconsentire ai loro piani. Tornato Des Grieux, trova ad attenderlo nella stanza, Lescaut, il quale gli offre del denaro per non cercare più Manon.
Si riapre la scena nel secondo atto, nuovamente ambientato nella locanda, tra il via vai delle ragazze con i ricchi clienti ,Lescaut è ubriaco, Manon con il nuovo ricco protettore si atteggia sfoggiando gioielli e pellicce che le sono stati donati, Grieux in preda alla disperazione cerca di ricondurre a se la giovane donna ,offrendole il suo amore ,ma nulla convince Manon fin quando quest’ultima architetta di raggirare al gioco delle carte il facoltoso Guillot con l’aiuto di Des Grieux.La partita truccata ha inizio ed i due cercano di sottrarre denaro al Monsieur, quest’ultimo, tuttavia, ben presto si accorge dell’inganno e risolve l’affronto a suon di spade .Nel caos generale i due giovani riescono a fuggire, così Monsieur Guillot si dirige direttamente da Lescaut ritenendolo responsabile del dolo e del piano di fuga della sorella.. Manon e Des Grieux elaborano un modo pe lasciare la città, purtroppo vengono interrotti dal ricco protettore che sopraggiunto con le guardie fa ammanettare Lescaut ed arrestare Manon come prostituta. Nel trambusto della vicenda Lescaut resta ucciso.
Manon viene deportata su una nave insieme ad una colonia di prostitute e criminali, accompagnata dal giovane Des Grieux che aveva dichiarato di esserne il marito. Il Carceriere si invaghisce della donna e cerca di abusare di lei, interviene, dunque il suo amato, il quale riesce a sconfiggere il carceriere, cosicché i due possano finalmente fuggire. Purtroppo le condizioni fisiche di Manon non le permettono di sopravvivere alla fuga, stremata da fatica e febbre, ella muore tra le braccia del suo amato.
